Now that the boating season is over and the weather is getting worse, it’s the perfect time to book your boat in for its yearly service. Why is now such a great time?

Well, here’s a few reasons:

  • The weather is turning for the worse, meaning some rivers may be displaying yellow or red boards (see below for more information)
  • We can winterise your boat whilst completing your service so that your boat is protected from the cold temperatures coming our way. This also ensures it should be ready to run come spring and the start of a new boating season.

Yellow/Red Boards*

Any river activity poses a greater risk when there are strong currents, high river levels or cold weather conditions. River flows can increase even during the summer months. Never assume that sunny weather means the conditions are not hazardous.

The Environment Agency may display warning boards at locks to inform river users of the conditions. Do not take risks and never underestimate the power of the river.

Red boards – Strong Stream warning. The Environment Agency advises users of all boats not to navigate as the strong flows make it difficult and dangerous.

Yellow boards will either say:

  • Stream increasing – The Environment advises users of unpowered boats not to navigate and users of powered boats to find a safe mooring. River flows are likely to strengthen and strong stream boards could be displayed.
  • Stream decreasing – The Environment Agency advises users of all unpowered boats not to navigate and users of powered boats to navigate with caution. Stream decreasing warning board will be issued once a strong stream warning board is no longer required.
